When did we stop doing the things that just made us happy?

When did we stop doing the things that just made us happy?

I've been thinking about this lately. Not in a heavy way ~ just noticing.

There was stuff we did as kids that had no purpose other than it felt good. No outcome to measure, no performance standard, no one watching. We just did it because something in us wanted to....

And then life happened. Service happened. Responsibilities happened. And somewhere in the middle of all of that, play just... quietly left the building 💔

I don't think we noticed it go. That's the thing. It wasn't a decision. It was just a slow drift away from anything that didn't have a point to it.

I've started wondering what it would look like to bring some of that back. Not in a big way. Just small. A thing I used to love that I've written off as something that belongs to a younger version of me.

So I'm genuinely curious > what did you love doing as a kid that you haven't done in years?.....

Drawing. Fishing. Kicking a ball around. Riding a bike. Lego. Swings. Building things. Being in water. Music. Skipping. Playing with pets. Climbing trees. Colouring in. Board games. Just mucking around outside with no plan whatsoever. Whatever it was 🧐

Let's chat > what would it take to do it again, even once?

No right answer here. I'm asking because I'm thinking about it myself..... @Oaktree @BecomingOkay @r3fresh @Magpie22

Hi @ccau_82

As a kid I loved climbing trees, I skipped rope, played with hula hoops and spent plenty of time on swings. I was actually quite talented with a hula hoop. I could start on my arm, move it onto my neck, take it all the way down to my knees and back up and off again. Kids would watch me do it. Think I missed my calling as a circus performer. Too fat now for hula hoops. I do still do things for fun like colouring or arts and crafts.

Hula is an artform, I watched a lady recently at a performance down Tweed way have about 11 hula hoops at once going 😳 mind blowing

I loved hulahooping too! @Oaktree though I don't think I was as good as you.

I used to absolutely LOVE anything crafty. I'd spend hours colouring in or painting. I truly couldn't get enough. This has definitely got me thinking @ccau_82. It might be time to buy one of those cosy calming colouring books that seem to be everywhere at the moment along with a pack of pencils or markers.

Besides the demands of life I think lots of our cheap dopamine comes from social media, and that's perhaps why we don't do as many things that bring us joy as we used to. What things did you used to love? What would you like to get into again? @ccau_82

@GalaxyGuide great response ♡ yes to more creative flow activities ++

As an only child I loved anything involving other children. BMX in the spare allotment beside our home with the streets kids. Visiting friends houses. Playing golf in the backyard, swimming. I did love card and board games but rarely had others to play them with. Watching old movies with my Nana ♡ ahhhh the ease of childhood
