Re: Friday Coffee & Chat - 3 April

Hey @Fluttershy1 ,

I saw your meme thread, but haven't looked at the contents of it yet. I'll do it soon. It reminds me of the The Ice-Memery thread.

As for chatting in the other thread, I won't be able to have 1:1 chats, but by all means tag me in and I'll get to it when I can. Feel free to also tag other members in if you wanted company. It's important we 'share the love' across all members on the forums. That's the nature of forums 🙂

Hope you understand.

Evening all 😀

@tyme @Fluttershy1 @Mustang67 @Anonymouse1000 @Cat34 @Shaz51 @Eve7 @Snowie and anyone else around 💕

Very quiet Easter here. Just Hannah and I. But the past week has been very busy and quite traumatic.

I slipped on a rock while out walking last Thursday week. Put my left hand out and, yep broke my wrist. I was lucky, I felt absolutely nothing, no pain at all. I looked at it and it was kinda zigzag shaped. I thought to myself "hmm, that looks broken, why can't I feel anything? It should be hurting. So I wobbled it, and it all went crunch. But still felt nothing.

So I turned around and walked the 15 mins back home. Hand in deep pocket so people I came across couldn't see. Some people freak out seeing badly distorted limbs 😯

So I called a cab and spent all day in the ER. Yes confirmed broken. Both main forearm bones near the wrist. And main bone overlapping and split too.

Hannah came to ER with me and was a little trooper. Such a good little girl.  Anyway the ortho Dr at the hospital decided the break was to complex and needed to be operated on. Couldn't get me in that day tho.

They did a closed reduction and plastered the arm to await surgery the following day.

Spent all day last Friday in pre op fasting, capped, gowned, bootied, etc. Got to 5.30pm and they told me I was cancelled due to emergencies thru the day. Come back 8am the next day.

So my surgery finally happened Saturday around lunchtime. Wrist is now all realigned, plated and screwed. They kept me in hospital overnight.

I had to have Hannah stay with her breeder as she would have been too upset while I was out of sight in surgery. But I got her home again after I got home from hospital Sunday afternoon.

So life is really difficult now. You don't realise how hard it is to manage with just one hand, while keeping cast dry. But I'm learning, and getting better. Showers and hair washed are the worst 🥺

Not being able to drive is very restrictive. So it's been taxis to medical appointments this week. At least Hannah is good at that 🐕❤️

But I really miss jumping in the car and heading into town and dropping into a Cafe for a nice chai latte. 😔

Re: Friday Coffee & Chat - 3 April

Yikes @Emelia8 !

Hannah is a trooper? So are you!

In a way, I'm glad you didn't feel the pain though! Maybe it was the adrenaline?

I'm so so sorry that happened. Sounds so traumatic.

Wish you well through the healing process. Sometimes we don't realise how much we use our hands until we can't anymore

In response to: Re: Friday Coffee & Chat - 3 April

Re: Friday Coffee & Chat - 3 April

Sending lots of love @Emelia8  and hoping you heal quickly ❤️

Re: Friday Coffee & Chat - 3 April

Thanks @tyme 🙏💕

Yes a bit traumatic, for both me and little Hannah. 😊

Regarding the pain, yes I'm very grateful for the lack of. By all accounts, broken wrists are extremely painful. And it worried me that I felt nothing. Maybe I damaged nerves or something?

The ER Dr when he did the closed reduction to pull it into some semblance of straightness b4 sending me home from ER to await surgery. He gave me the big needle, then two of them manipulated, and tugged.  He kept saying are you okay? Yes. Is that hurting? No.

Then in hospital post surgery they were pushing the heavy duty addictive pain killer meds. I kept telling them no, I don't need them. I know they are all about pain management these days. But sometimes I wonder if they push it too far. Why take it if you don't need it? Little wonder people get hooked.

So yeah, all along I have just taken mild otc painkillers as needed. [edited by mod]

Worst part has been really bad bruising and some swelling around my elbow and above. So I get an ache around the elbow. But it's helped with mild otc painkillers. [edited by mod] I'm told it's trauma from the original break, which can travel up the arm.

But if it was adrenaline, it would have caught up with me eventually. It hasn't. So clearly there is something wrong with me, or I'm just weird. 😂. But lucky 🍀

Re: Friday Coffee & Chat - 3 April

Oh @Emelia8 I am so sorry to hear about your arm. You must of damage some nerves in your arm as well if you didn't feel any pain. Which I might add is a good thing. I am glad they got you into surgery relatively quickly to have to realigned properly. How long do you need to keep the plaster on for? And do the screws and plates stay in, or do they get removed at a later date.

The only thing I have broken on my body if my little toe doing a backflip at gymnastic when I was about 9, so I have no idea what it is like to be plastered or have screws and plates put in my body. But I can see how having the plaster on can be a big inconvenience, so I hope that they don't make you keep that on for too long.

I am glad that Hannah was a god girl for you and is now back at home with you.

I wish you a very speedy recovery.

Re: Friday Coffee & Chat - 3 April

Yes, lucky in deed. But you feel pain other times, right? @Emelia8

Also, yes, I had to remove the name of the med, so replaced it with 'painkillers'. Hope that's okay. You can use the class of medicine, just not the brand etc.

How long will recovery be? Sounds like it's been so traumatic physically and mentally. Is Hannah okay? I know how sensitive dogs can be.

Re: Friday Coffee & Chat - 3 April

@Emelia8

That's sounds like it would have hurt a lot... I know I broke my arm when I was young but I don't really remember it cause it was so long ago. Hopefully your recovery is speedy!

Re: Friday Coffee & Chat - 3 April

Oh dear @Emelia8

You and Hannah certainly have been through a lot. It is very hard trying to do things one handed.

Sending lots of 💕💕to you both.

In response to: Re: Friday Coffee & Chat - 3 April

Re: Friday Coffee & Chat - 3 April

Thanks @Eve7 🙏💕

Yes that's what I'm thinking too @Mustang67, that I must have damaged some nerves. I mean, given the damage, I should have felt something surely?

I have an appointment at the fracture clinic next Thursday (2 weeks post fracture) to take existing plaster off and check wound and stitching etc. They will re-xray and see how its going. I may be able to get a waterproof or removable cast if all going well at that point. One of the benefits of plate and screws is that the cast is often not needed as long. And yes, the plate and screws generally stay in for life. Unless they begin to cause a problem, in which case its another operation to remove them down the track. Like you, my only other fracture was when I was little. Very little for me. I had just started walking apparently. I was 10 months old and fell off a stool and broke my ankle. And now, at nearly 67, I get my second. Many thanks Mustang for your well wishes for a speedy recovery. I hope so too. 🌺

Thanks @tyme for fixing my post. 🙏 See above explanation re length of recovery. And yes, I normally feel pain. I mean I get headaches on occasion. And I went through extreme pain with my back injury prior to my 3 major surgeries throughout 2022. That was excruciating nerve pain. And yeah I was on the very strong addictive pain meds for a long time for that. So I do indeed feel pain! Hannah was quite unsettled with all the disruption over those few days. They definitely do feel it. But she seems to have settled back into our more normal routines again now. Though she is watching me like a little hawk, and not letting me out of her sight, the little sweetheart. 🐶💕

Thanks so much @Anonymouse1000 for your speedy recovery wishes. Much appreciated 🧡

@Snowie💝Yes its been pretty tough, but getting easier. I am beginning to get a tiny bit of strength in my fingers now. And that is making it a little easier to get simple stuff done. And of course, you do learn to adapt don't you? You have to, in life, I guess.
